Summer festivals for fans of Dean Martin, art, even haggis
by Laura DeMarco, Plain Dealer Friday magazine editor Thursday May 28, 2009, 7:32 PM

Associated Press
Who could possibly throw a bigger party than Steubenville's Dean Martin?

It's summer in the city, and we know what that means: festival time. Clevelanders will find an event, or two, to celebrate almost every weekend. You probably know about many of the big fairs and feasts -- the Cuyahoga County Fair, the Feast of the Assumption, Oktoberfest, etc. -- but there's much more to our festival scene. Read on for some of The Best (Lesser Known) Fests to Discover This Summer:

Dean Martin Festival, various locations in Steubenville, Thursday, June 18-Sunday, June 21, 1-800-510-4442, deanmartinsteubenville.com: Raise a glass -- or two, or three -- to one of Ohio's most famous sons. Held each year in the legendary Rat Packer and partier's hometown, the Martin fest pays homage to the singer's humble roots (he was a blackjack dealer and welterweight boxer) and eventual stardom. Events include tours (see the church where young Dino served as an altar boy!), parades, impersonators galore, screenings of Martin films, a meet-and-greet with Martin's daughter Deana, and even a meatball-eating contest. Prices vary per event; see the Web site for the full schedule.

Dean Martin and his Influence on Elvis

Hey pallies, the name of our Dino continues to be lifted up in such cool ways. Thanks to a dude tagged Jason at the www.ElvisInternational.com site (clicks on tagg of this Dinogram to goes there) we have a refreshed and renewed edition of Chris Spedding's stellar Dinoarticle 'bout the amazin' influence that our Dino had on the Elvis.

Knows many many of you Dinoholics have read this Dinoprose before, but so glad for Mr. Chris to be again bringin' this to the attention of many who have never read this before. Just the greatest to know that the power of our Dino is bein' known and honored in more and more places on the web. Gotta 'fess up that I have never been, and never plan to be a fan of the Elvis, but likes I truly digg how much Mr. Presley loved and emulated our Dino... Dinodelightedly, DMP btw, there are almost no pixs of our Dino and the Elvis available on the web...the one here is of our Dino, and Elvis with Miss Shirley on the occasion of our Dino's birthday.

Dean Martin and his Influence on Elvis May 28, '09 11:38 AM
by Jason for everyone

I read the article below from Chris Spedding and thought it was very thought provoking and spot on in terms of Elvis influences, not just by Dean Martin but by others. I've often responded to people that say Elvis stole the Black person's music or ripped off R&B and reply "Yes, he did, in fact he stole form White and Black gospel; he stole from country, and western bop, he stole from Mario Lanza and many other great singers, and he stole from rhythm and blue to create something completely new." The point being that Elvis was a true blend of so many types of music when he started making those out of this world Sun Records. You can hear everything from Grand Ole Opry to Howlin' Wolf when he sings That's Alright, Mama or Good Rockin Tonight. You can hear Hank Williams honky tonk blues, Dean Martin's sexual swagger, and Jake Hess' gospel power on Elvis early recordings. It is so politically correct to ONLY concentrate on the R&B contribution I am glad to see someone point out that there were other influences and agree that Dean Martin was a Big influence.

Check out the article below:

Elvis & Dino
The Elvis Presley legend has been growing since his first impact over forty years ago - the same time that rock'n'roll made its first impact. Successive generations of well-intentioned but misguided myth-makers have been dismayed that their supposedly infallible icon Elvis and rock'n'roll parted company at some point. They don't have a satisfactory explanation for it.

Oh, they write reams of scholarly theses defining the music and fight dearly to keep their precious flame burning, yet become oddly discomfited and evasive at the prospect of their own anointed king holding court at that graveyard of rock credibility, Las Vegas - and worse still, appearing in silly, lightweight Hollywood movies. These muddled courtiers can commit no more lese majeste than to mumble that maybe their apostate king had "sold out."

There is an explanation for all this, however, and it occurs in one of the more palatable of the Presley bios, Jerry Hopkins' Elvis, and the fact that Hopkins himself didn't jump on it instead of giving it a mere passing reference shows how brainwashed these writers were by their own propaganda.

The reason it was left in Hopkins' manuscript at all was probably because it represents one of the few accredited quotes from the one person most sources agree can legitimately lay claim to having "discovered" Elvis, the office manager of Sam Phillips' Sun Records studio in Memphis, Marion Keisker, who tells of a not entirely successful first audition Presley had with Phillips. According to Marion, Sam asked Elvis to run through some of his repertoire, which seemed to lean so heavily on Dean Martin stuff, she thought Elvis had decided "...if he was going to sound like anybody, it was going to be Dean Martin." Horror of horrors! Now this is just not cool, fellows, I hear the myth-makers say. Hopkins himself leaves this extraordinary snippet unexplored and other writers have given it a wide berth.

It takes only the most casual research of this lead to unearth evidence on a par (for the rock world at least) with the Dead Sea Scrolls. All the more remarkable since the evidence has been there all along for anybody with eyes to see and ears to hear.

Around 1955, Dean Martin had a big hit, "Memories Are Made Of This." Do yourself a favor and check it out if you can find it. Then take another listen to the song Elvis always said was his favorite cut, "Don't Be Cruel," a hit in the summer of the following year, 1956. Now, apart from the fact that Elvis borrowed that descending-bass-run-followed-by-guitar-chord ending from the arrangement on Martin's record, other common elements are that sexy, wobbly, almost hiccuping baritone vocal not yet identifiably "rock" until Elvis made it so and Martin's novel use of a four-piece male gospel-type vocal group which we may assume helped inspire Elvis, steeped as he was in traditional gospel music, to introduce the Jordanaires on his cut, effectively integrating them into a unique blend with his own lead vocal, thus establishing another rock archetype. Another obvious nod in Martin's direction, released when Elvis was well established as a pop mega-star in the summer of 1959, was Elvis's "My Wish Came True," which had an opening four-note motif identical to Martin's "Return To Me," (both titles having four syllables!) released in April 1958. Even the key is the same. Dean Martin and Elvis Presley were moving in such divergent paths by this time that none of this was commented upon or even noticed at the time. And I suspect that Elvis wouldn't have given a rat's ass if it had been. Because shortly after this he was to step, unnoticed, totally out of the closet with his release of "It's Now Or Never,"an English-language version of the Italian favorite, "O Sole Mio" - a rather staid choice, one might say, for our supposed enfant terrible of rockabilly. These three songs are even more compelling evidence of Martin's influence than Elvis's actual cover of Martin's 1950 ditty, "I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine" in 1955.

Now, if it's so fashionable and cool to cite a black artist like Arthur Crudup, whose "That's All Right, Mama" Elvis recorded, as a bona fide influence, then why not the former piece of stylistic plundering? Without wishing to minimize Crudup's contribution to Presley's fast maturing style, Martin's influence seems to be pretty much ignored as unfashionable and uncool. People are just seeing and hearing what they want to see and hear. Dare I suggest that the specter of such an artist as Martin so influencing their precious new savior was not to be countenanced by the rock religion's new priesthood?

For if we reevaluate Presley's early career in this new light we can see how many of those actions previously dismissed (or considered perverse when they could not be conveniently ignored) now fall into place quite neatly. You see, Elvis was naturally fair-haired. He dyed his hair black. (He appears as a "dirty" blond in some early shots, his natural hair-tone already darkening through liberal applications of "Nu-Nile.") Filmed later in Technicolor, Elvis's obsidian do had that same almost blue-black sheen you can see in Dean Martin's movies. And Martin at the time of which we speak was the most bankable of matinee idols: he made hugely successful pop records; starred (with partner Jerry Lewis) in a series of low budget/high yield light comedy movies; could and did write his own ticket on the lucrative Las Vegas circuit; and (importantly for Elvis) had mucho sex appeal! (Is this starting to make a little sense?)

Martin was a genuine heartthrob, and with his self-mocking approach to sexuality demonstrated to Elvis how to cash in on this most marketable of commodities with the brazenness of a male Mae West!

There are no less than seventeen references to Elvis in Nick Tosches 1992 "Dino" but for me the most telling is on page 394, when Elvis glimpses his hero in the audience during his show at the International in Vegas in January 1970. "Seeing him at ringside, Elvis, elated sang 'Everybody Loves Somebody' in his honor." This is the same guy who worried about forgetting the lyrics to his own hits but was confident enough in remembering his idol's latest hit to give an impromptu performance of it!

Granted, Dean Martin was a comparative cultural and musical lightweight, but Elvis is not alone in music history in being able to combine incongruous influences into something world-shattering. Some parallels would be the influence Anthony Newley had on the emergent David Bowie, and the effect Woody Guthrie and Rambling' Jack Elliott had on Bob Dylan.

Every great artist models himself on someone during his formative years. And, when he comes into his own will transcend his earlier influences. And we have now revealed enough points of symmetry between Dino and our fledgling Elvis to give us due pause. There were no rock'n'roll stars for Elvis to emulate - he was, after all, the first! And he was to go on and eclipse his mentor in every way.

I'm going to leave it at that for now? no sense in spoiling my case by overstating it! I am aware that I will now be considered a dangerous heretic by certain stalwarts of the true religion. But from my point of view it's now up to those worthies to redress the balance, if they don't already have too much egg on their faces. The worst that could come out of this for me would be for there to be discovered a recording by Dean Martin of "Hound Dog."

Dean Martin

Laid-back, ultra-cool singer, actor, TV personality, Roast Master to the Stars and coolest member of the Rat Pack. Sammy was the hippest, but Dean was definitely coolest. And Frank was just Frank.

Lakso passed away as a recording of Dean Martin's "Everybody Loves Somebody" played.

Hey pallies, 'nother person who was priviledged to know and work with our Dino has passed from this life....writer and composer Edward J. Lakso. Mr. Lakso got to work with our Dino on those fabulous episodes of "Charlies' Angels' that our great man starred in 1978.

With all due respect to Mr. Lakso and his family, I am so thrilled to learn that Mr. Lakso was listenin' to our Dino sing "Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime" at the time of his passin'. I thinks that this is so great of his widow, Lee Travis, to share this detail with the world....what could be more wonderful then to be listenin' to our Dino sings his stellar classic as one finishes the journey of life. Truly such a comfort to knows that our Dino loves us.

Thanks to Mike Barnes of the "Hollywood Reporter" for sharin' this Dinostory with us...certain to bring more pallies to know, love, and honor our Dino. To checks this out in it's original format, just clicks on the tagg of this Dinogram.

You just never ever know where our Dino is goin' to turn up next...our Dino is certainly the man for all times, all places, and all occasions..... Dinorespectfully, DMP

Writer, composer Edward J. Lakso dies
Writer, producer, composer and lyricist was 76
By Mike Barnes

May 28, 2009, 05:11 PM ET
Edward J. Lakso, a prolific writer, producer, composer and lyricist in Hollywood for almost four decades, died May 23 at his Beverly Hills home of complications of Parkinson's disease. He was 76.

Lakso created more than 400 hours of television and mentored the likes of Gene Levitt, E. Jack Neuman and Aaron Spelling. For the ABC series "Charlie's Angels," which ran 1976-81, Lakso wrote 25 episodes, produced 28 and wrote music for two.

His wife, Lee Travis, said Lakso passed away as a recording of Dean Martin's "Everybody Loves Somebody" played. Lakso got to know Martin when he guest starred on the 1978 season-opener of "Charlie's Angels."

Lakso also penned 33 episodes of 1960s series "Combat!" and wrote for "The Rockford Files," "Star Trek," "Adventures in Paradise," "Mannix," "The Rat Patrol" and "The Big Valley" among many other shows.

Lakso, who sang opera and played jazz piano, wrote, directed and composed music for "43: The Richard Petty Story," a 1974 film that starred the stock car driver as himself.

Lakso's career gained momentum with "The Immoral Mr. Teas" (1959), a witty romp that he wrote with director and soft porn king Russ Meyer. Lakso contributed original music and songs for that film.

Prodded by a teacher at UCLA, Lakso wrote a script for the 1959 film "Operation Dames," then took a role when one of the actors was a no-show. He also wrote and directed 1973's "Brother on the Run" (also known as "Boots Turner"), an early blaxploitation film.

EMI looks to market Martin's 'cool'

The recording company EMI recently struck a deal with the Dean Martin Trust to license the late crooner's name and suave image. Bob Moon reports.

TEXT OF STORY

BOB MOONL:

While you're out shopping this weekend, you might notice one of the new holiday music CD's on prominent display isn't so new. EMI Music is repacking Dean Martin's popular album "Christmas with Dino," including a new duet featuring Martina McBride.

Yes, you do remember correctly that Dean Martin died more than 10 years ago at the age of 78. But executives at the big recording company figure his name still has plenty of value.

In fact, EMI recently struck a deal with the Dean Martin Trust to license the late crooner's name and suave image.

EMI has long held the rights the Martin's old songs, but the company's marketing chief Ronn Werre says this opens the way for everything from Dean Martin home furnishings to men's fashions.
RONN WERRE: He had a sense of style about him, of elegance. Yet, he was very accessible. He was like the man next door. He was everybody's friend. He was the original king of cool and still is.
And that's exactly the image that EMI hopes to capitalize on. EMI realized how much value Martin's name still holds a couple of years ago when it released "Dino: The Essential Dean Martin." That "best of" CD debuted at Number 28 on the Billboard charts and went platinum. And it turned out the audience wasn't just his old fans. The album was the fifth-most-downloaded that week on iTunes.

Which helps explain why Werre thinks there's still a market for, say, a high-end line of vodkas and wines and, of course, Dean Martin barware:
MARTIN SHOW ANNOUNCER: And now here he is, direct from the bar — Dean Martin. . .

DEAN MARTIN: How long I been on, boy?
In this case, the marketing tie-ins are obvious. But EMI's Ron Werre sees this as a way to boost its bottom line in the face of slumping music sales, and he has dreams of mass-marketing other icons from the EMI catalogue — maybe John Lennon or Frank Sinatra.
WERRE: We spend a significant amount of marketing dollars building an artist's brand. And in that process, we understand the consumer that that artist is attracted to. So I just think it's a real natural extension of what a record company has done historically.
And lest you doubt the value in the big names of our past: We sent reporter Karen Donovan to talk to people at the spot where Martin's star sits on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She found a passerby in his 20s who knew the Martin name, and that might be enough:
DONOVAN: Do you think he was cool?

MAN: I think to the kids at those times, yes, he was cool. I don't know a lot about him. Like, if I had to pick, yes, I would say, yeah, he was definitely, he was the Daddy of Cool.
She also asked one of Martin's older fans if she'd buy a Dean Martin product:
WOMAN: Not just because it had his image. It would draw my attention to the product, that's for sure.
. . . And even that woman's daughter might take notice…
DAUGHTER: "I think a lot of people would buy that. Vintage is in, so things from back in the day are great for, you know, the new people coming up right now."
By the way, a representative of the Dean Martin Trust told us they're supportive of an approach that treats Martin as if he's still alive.

Overview by Shaun Dale

Though his career didn't suffer the collapse that many predicted with the 1956 dissolution of his partnership with Jerry Lewis (noteworthy film appearances in "The Young Lions" and hit records like "Memories Are Made Of This" and "Return To Me" provided ample solo credibility), Dean Martin's last years with Capitol Records were beginning to show diminishing returns. '58's "Volare" was his last top 40 track for the label, which was a significant decline for an artist who had scored a top 20 song nearly every year for the preceding decade, and who had landed a #1 hit just two years previously.

When his "pally" Frank Sinatra left Capitol to form the new Reprise Records in 1962, Martin was one of the first to follow, bringing both his talent and his bankbook along. His first Reprise release, French Style, appeared in April, followed closely by Dino Latino in October. Neither produced that elusive hit single, though, and Martin was soon back in the studio.

His next releases, Country Style and Dean "Tex" Martin Rides Again, appeared in January and April of 1963, revealing Martin's affection for country music and his skill at negotiating the "countrypolitan" sound that was then in vogue. With his success in western films and his laid back style, country & western material seemed to fit Martin as well or better than the Italian songs he had so often scored with, but again, while Country Style found a spot on the album charts, the hit singles didn't appear. It was while recording Dream With Dean for a June, 1964, release that he covered an old number from the Sinatra book, "Everybody Loves Somebody," with a low key arrangement featuring Barney Kessel's guitar. When Martin took son Dino, Jr.'s fascination with the ascendent Beatles as a challenge, he and producer Jimmy Bowen plucked that song from the album for a beefed up arrangement and released a second album in the same month named for the song the two shared in common. Amazingly, despite nearly simultaneous release, both albums charted. More significantly, Dean Martin was back in the pop singles charts with his first #1 record since 1956, dislodging his son's heroes from the spot they'd held with "A Hard Day's Night."

He returned to the charts promptly, with "The Door Is Still Open To My Heart" climbing to #6 by September, the album of the same name appearing in November. That was three album releases in 1964 alone, and seven in the two years since Martin had joined Reprise. For a man who seemed to live in a permanent slouch and never seemed serious about anything, that was an incredible output. If Dean Martin was successful, he worked harder for that success than his persona implied. Perhaps it was the experience of the young Dino Crocetti from Steubenville, Ohio that made any show business endeavor seem like something less than work to the adult Dean Martin. Certainly his experiences as a millworker, gas jockey, bootlegger and prizefighter carried more effort and/or risk for less reward than rolling into the studio to croon out a best selling LP. That wasn't all he was up to, of course. During that same two year period, he appeared in starring roles in 6 of his 51 films and was in the process of joining his Rat Pack pallies in taking virtual title to the Las Vegas strip.

Martin was back with another hit single before the end of the year with "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You," which helped the January '65 release of Dean Martin Hits Again reach #13 on the album charts. The album produced another top 40 entry with "Send Me The Pillow That You Dream On." He followed in September with (Remember Me) I'm The One Who Loves You, a #12 album that produced another top 40 hit with the title track. There was one more album for 1965, though, and it would climb higher yet, to #11, on the back of another pair of hit singles, the title track, "Houston," and the top ten hit, "I Will."

While Houston was climbing the charts, Dean Martin was busy conquering yet another entertainment avenue. The Dean Martin Show premiered on NBC in the fall of 1965 and promptly established itself as the TV season's biggest new hit and Dean Martin as the '60s version of the King of All Media. He had also started a new film series, featuring Dino as Matt Helm, secret agent extraordinaire. His soundtrack album for the first Matt Helm movie, Dean Martin Sings Songs From "The Silencers," was released in March and, predictably, found a spot on the charts. In November, The Dean Martin TV Show appeared in LP form, and settled into the #34 spot on the album charts with 10 tracks featuring Martin with his TV bandleader, Les Brown and his Band Of Reknown. In a mere 4 years at Reprise, Martin had produced 12 LPs, with 9 making the charts, and 9 top 40 singles to match. Those partial to his Capitol years might consider that it took him 8 years to reach similar landmarks there, and there were no Beatles, Beach Boys or Rolling Stones to contend with.

The occasion for this trip down memory lane is the appearance of each of the albums I've mentioned in a new series of two-fers from Collector's Choice Music. This is truly a landmark reissue venture. Because of a combination of Martin's stature and savvy, he retained ownership of all of his Reprise recordings, and this is the first US release of this material on CD (some of it has appeared in Europe on an earlier greatest hits package and in a typically astronomically priced Bear Family set). With each disc holding two full albums, along with original cover art and liner notes, and brief historical notes with release and chart data, they are both superb values and invaluable documents of one of the great catalogs of American popular music. Finally licensed for release by Martin's heirs, who have held the rights since his death in 1995, these are the first six releases of a planned 12, which will put 24 of his Reprise releases in long overdue general circulation. The remastering is superb, the music ranges from interesting to exceptional, and your prompt acquisition is highly encouraged.

Playing on Youtube again
I was going to download a couple of songs to my iTunes, but I need to be sure I was remembering the right songs so I fired up Youtube to verify the songs before paying for them. Well, that led to spending a good couple of hours viewing various videos after I found the particular song I was looking for tonight. I started out looking for Mac Davis "Baby, Baby Don't Get Hooked on Me" and found Nancy Sinatra's "Bang, Bang" and "These Boots are Made for Walking." That led me to viewing a few duets Nancy had with her brother Frank, Elvis, and Dean. Once I hit Dean that is where I got stuck. Love, love, love Dean Martin!!!!

Dean Martin - Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime 1965

I particularly love the comment starting at 1:40. It's where Dean says, "I feel sorry for you people who don't drink. I mean it, because when you wake up in the morning that's as good as you're going to feel all day."

DINO: "He cultivated a curious persona – smart, self-confident and, above all else, relaxed and tolerant."

Hey pallies, likes all you regular Dinoreaders knows that I tries to stay apolitico at this here Dinoblog, but sometimes in the midst of a political post our Dino is lifted up and likes just gotta share 'em with you.

Such is the case for this Dinopost. A dude tagged Alan Palvik has posted a post tagged "The Day of the Pious Scolds" at his blog "Just Above Sunset." As part of the post he lifts up the name of our Dino and celebrates his Dinolegacy and I am postin' that part of post below.

Actually our Dino runs all through the post and if you wanna read everythin' that Mr. Palvik has to say 'bout our great man, likes just clicks on the tagg of this Dinogram to go to the original blogg post. Loves seein' our Dino honored in this way. And, Mr. Pavlik ends his epistle with this very Dinotruthful Dinonote...."Where’s Dean Martin when you need him?"

Indeed, we need our Dino more then ever, and that is why it is so so stellar to see more and more of today's youth turnin' to our Dino to find the answers to life's most important questions. Thanks Alan Pavlik for liftin' up the name of our Dino! Dinodelightedly, DMP

"Dean Martin (Dino Paul Crocetti) ended up out here – splitting his time between Hollywood and Las Vegas, hanging with the Rat Pack – Sinatra, Sammy Davis and the others – and making his mark as a very cool singer, a rather good actor, finally, as an amiable guy who was always slightly buzzed. He cultivated a curious persona – smart, self-confident and, above all else, relaxed and tolerant. He was laid to rest not far from Marilyn Monroe, at that odd memorial park on Wilshire, and he was also a certain American type – loose and happy, and not one bust anyone’s chops. If anyone had a cause or a mission in life – and was full of zeal and self-righteousness – he’d smile at the audience and take another sip of scotch. You’d get the joke. The sanctimonious were amusing, but they weren’t cool. He might cut a check to their charity on the sly, but he’d not tell anyone. You don’t go around doing that holier-than-thou crap. The claim is always absurd."

The Dean Martin Show is a TV variety-comedy series that ran from 1965 to 1974, for 245 episodes. It was broadcast by NBC and hosted by legendary crooner Dean Martin. The theme song to the series was his 1964 hit "Everybody Loves Somebody."

Development
Martin was initially reluctant to do the show, partially because he did not want to turn down movie and nightclub performances. His terms were deliberately outrageous: he demanded a high salary and that he need only show up for the actual taping of the show.[citation needed] To his surprise the network agreed, and Martin had to comply.
Martin believed that an important key to his popularity was that he did not put on airs. His act was that of a drunken playboy, although the ever-present old-fashioned glass in his hand often only had apple juice in it. The show was heavy on physical comedy rather than just quips. (He made his weekly entrance by sliding down a fireman's pole onto the stage.) Martin took his dialogue direct from cue cards. If he flubbed a line or forgot a lyric, he wouldn't do a retake, and the mistake and his recovery from it would remain in the show.
The Dean Martin Show was shot on color videotape beginning in 1965 at Studio 4 inside NBC's massive color complex in Burbank, California. The same studio was used for Frank Sinatra's yearly TV specials in the late 1960s, and Elvis Presley's 1968 "Comeback Special". Studio 4 is currently one of two used in the production of the soap opera "Days Of Our Lives".
Regular segments
Martin sang two solo numbers, one of them a serious ballad. He would join his weekly guests (Petula Clark, Lena Horne, Bing Crosby, etc.) in song medleys, trading lyrics back and forth. Some of these duets were deliberately played for laughs (Dean and Liberace, for example) with special lyrics by Lee Hale to suit the performers.
One recurring segment was based on Martin's club act, in which Martin would begin to sing a popular song and suddenly sing a gag punchline. Martin often tried to make his pianist, Ken Lane, laugh hard enough to break his concentration. A continual gag on the show would have a knock from the closet door on the set, with Martin opening the door to reveal an unannounced celebrity guest. Often, even Martin did not know who the guest would be, to make it more of a surprise.[citation needed]
The finale of each program was a production number featuring Dean and the guest stars. Occasionally the finale was a musical sketch with Martin as Dino Vino, a disc jockey who played old records. A vintage record would then be heard, with Dean and his cronies mouthing the words and pantomiming outrageously for comic effect. During the show's last season, the finale was a selection of songs from a popular MGM film musical. Clips from the film in question would be shown, with Martin and the guests on the show singing a medley of tunes from the films. Among the films saluted were Easter Parade, Words and Music, Till the Clouds Roll By, and the 1951 film version of Show Boat.
When the show was cancelled in 1974, a series of Dean Martin celebrity roasts was produced in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Hotel (a tradition started on the variety series' last season).
Regular performers and frequent guests
In later seasons, many regular performers were added, such as Dom DeLuise and Nipsey Russell in sketches set in a barbershop (always ending with Dean and company singing "When You Were Sweet Sixteen"), Kay Medford and Lou Jacobi in sketches set in a diner, Guy Marks, Tom Bosley, Marian Mercer, Charles Nelson Reilly, and Rodney Dangerfield. Bandleader Les Brown was also a regular.
During the 1965 season, The Krofft Puppets were seen regularly. Their stint, however, only lasted 8 episodes. Sid and Marty Krofft were fired because Martin felt he was being upstaged by their puppets.
Summer replacement series
Dean Martin's Thursday-night time slot was valuable to the network,[citation needed] and Martin's production crew created original summer programming (without Martin) to hold Martin's usual weekly...(and so on) To get More information , you can visit some products about active components, brick manufacturer, . The products should be show more here!
