Dean Martin — “Houston”

BY JOE MALCHOW ON NOVEMBER 8, 2007

For no good reason at all, here is the song that, randomly pouring out of the Sirius standards and swing channel four years ago, turned me over to a Dean Martin lover. It’s “Houston,” a Lee Hazlewood tune about a fellow who finds himself in a strange city with “no one who calls him friend” and “holes in both of his shoes.” (Do not fret for the man: he has a girl waitin’ home for him—or, at least she said she’d be.)

Hazlewood was more of a producer than a songwriter, but one other famous work of his is “These Boots Are Made For Walking,” which achieved tremendous success after he instructed Nancy Sinatra to sing it “like a 16-year old girl who f***s truck drivers.” But “Houston” is a pretty song, with no such wretchedness.

As a bonus, in the extended entry enjoy an earlier television performance Deano gave of “Houston.”

Back in the day, "Houston" was a huge hit on almost every radio station (AM, of course) in the United States!

Lee Hazelwood had the knack for composing wonderful tunes, and our Dino could certainly sing 'em better than anyone else.
