On This Day In Dino-history: February 24, 1976

Hey pallies, likes it's 'nother important day in Dino-history today....and indeed it has an amore theme to it as well, but likes then what coulda there be 'bout our most beloved Dino's life that doesn't touch on amore in some Dino-way?!?!?!   Likes it  was on  February 24, in the year of our Dino 1976 that Dino legally cut the strings to wife numero three, Catherine Mae Hawn, and ever more woulda be a free agent.

Likes I found the "TV Movie Screen" cover below likes so so revealin' that our great man the day after he said I do to Cathy, was already havin' second thoughts 'bout his marriage to her. At least, on paper the marriage lasted not quite three years.

Our Dino crooned that he was "Not The Marryin' Kind" and indeed after he became free of Miss Hawn, he chose not to tie the knot 'gain 'though in an filmed interview he alluded to the possiblity of returnin' to wife numbero duo, Jeanne Biegger, but that was not to happen. This Dino-date was verified by the pallies at the Dean Martin Timeline, which you can check out if you clicks on the tag of this Dino-gram. Dino-rememberin', DMP

Powell's prose is a lovin' look at our most beloved Dino, our King of Cool, and country music singer Roger Miller, known as the King of the Road 'cause of his his greatest country hit of the same tag. Matt does a fine job of mixin' pix, prose, and vids to demonstrate to his readership how Dino and Roger  "were quite similar in many ways."

We are especially delighted to have Powell share two grand and glorious clips of Dino and Roger taken from the Dino-show.  We delight in the remarkable rapport these two greats have in sharin' comic moments and well as croonin' together.   Here are to fun guys havin' some fantastic fun together.

The King of Cool and the King of the Road

FEBRUARY 19, 2015
hqdefault
Dean Martin and Roger Miller may seem an unlikely pair at first, but the two entertainers were quite similar in many ways. They both possessed an inviting, conversational vocal style, a sharp, playful wit, a natural ability at improvisation and an endless supply of humor and charm.
Roger Miller was a country music superstar who achieved cross-over commercial success with infectious masterpieces like “King of the Road” and “Dang Me.” Martin was a pop and film icon who had a sincere affection for country music and recorded several country albums, beginning with 1963’sCountry Style. Dino even covered a few Roger Miller songs.
Here’s a clip of these two flip sides of the same coin in a sketch from The Dean Martin Show about fishing, drinking and a “Dang Me” duet. And just as Dean Martin could wrap himself around a heartfelt ballad with the best of the crooners, so too did Roger Miller have a gift for poignant ballads. The clip closes with Miller singing his masterful “Husbands and Wives” at Dino’s request.
Roger Miller made four appearances on The Dean Martin Show between 1966-68. Here they meet up in Season 1 for some humorous wordplay. Miller calls out for a number, Martin answers with 21, and the two begin to seemingly write a song on the spot. (Of course the song, “Got 2 Again,” had already been written and recorded by Miller – the record begins by Miller calling out for “a number between 20 and 22” – released as the B-side to “Dang Me.” But why spoil the fun?)

Now we are one and not afraid
If there is a cloud above
If it should rain we'll let it
But for tonight forget it

With this film’s standout performance coming from Dean Martin (Ocean’s 11) in the role of pop crooner named Dino.

Hey pallies, likes how incredibly cool is it dudes to have our most beloved Dino's hottest of hot amorin' big screen performances bein' highlighted all over the ol' net this month of Dino-amore.  Likes of course we are speakin' of the recent release this past Tuesday, February 17, of that fantastico flick "Kiss Me Stupid."

Recently we have shared a number of remarkable reviews of this new Olive Films released of "KMS" in both regular and Bluray DVD versions, and likes today on this twentieth day of Dino-amore month we are pleasurably pumped to share yet 'nother piece of incredible insight into this most most controversial of all our King of Cool's king size efforts on the big screen.

From the fantastic flick blog " 10Kbullets - Exploring the World of Cinema from the Arthouse to the Grindhouse" comes there first Dino-review (that we could find at least of "KMS" from reviewer Mr. Michael Den Boer.  Den Boer takes the usual and logical approach to revewin' "KMS" by first givin' his readership the basic outline of the plot and then sharin' the incredible credentials of director Billy Wilder.  And, then we gets to the meat of his comments and they are indeed first class.

From his powerful prose we just know that Michael not only gets "KMS," he also gets our Dino as well.  He totally totally gets that "KMS" is a flick films long before it's time sayin'...."If ever there was case to be made about a film that missed its audience due to being ahead of its time, than that film would be Kiss Me, Stupid."  And he totally totally gets our Dino playin' his coolest of cool, hippest of hip, randiest of randy self sayin' "With this film’s standout performance coming from Dean Martin (Ocean’s 11) in the role of pop crooner named Dino. His performance is essentially a caricature of his own persona."

We are powerfully positive that Mr. Michael Den Boer will send many out to purchase this lesser known and under appreciated effort of our Dino 'cause it is clear that Den Boer is smitten by this flick as well as smitten by our Dino...what more can we say dudes?  We shouts out our deepest of deep Dino-appreciato for doin' his part to gets the word out 'bout this re-release of "Kiss Me Stupid" and helpin' many many more pallies to gets into the Dino-groove with this perfect Dino-effort.  To checks this out in it's original format, simply clicks on the tag of this here Dino-report.  Dino-awed, DMP

Synopsis: A pop music crooner named Dino is forced to take a detour on his way from Las Vegas to Los Angeles where in a few days he is going to film his next T.V. special. Along the way he finds himself in a small rural town named Climax and when he stops for gas he is quickly noticed by the gas station attendant, who also happens to be an aspiring song writer. Not wanting to let his one chance at stardom slip through his fingers the gas station attendant enlists the help of songwriting partner. They come up with a plan that ensures that Dino will be found forced to stay the night in Climax and hear their music. Unfortunately for them Dino has other ideas of what he would like to do for the night and these plans involve hooking up with a beautiful lady. Not willing to give up just yet the two songwriters hire a waitress to play the role of one of their wives and she is also given the task of keeping Dino happy while they try to get him to listen to their music.
Kiss Me, Stupid was directed by Billy Wilder whose other notable films include, Double Indemnity, The Lost Weekend, Sunset Boulevard, The Seven Year ItchSome Like it Hot and The Apartment. Key collaborators on Kiss Me, Stupid include cinematographer Joseph LaShelle (I Was a Teenage WerewolfThe Long, Hot Summer), composer André Previn (Irma la Douce,The Fortune Cookie) and screenwriter I.A.L. Diamond a frequent collaborator of Billy Wilder’s. Casting choices that never materialized for this film include Marilyn Monroe in the role Zelda and Peter Sellers in the role of Orville. These roles when eventually portrayed by Kim Novak and Ray Walston.
If ever there was case to be made about a film that missed its audience due to being ahead of its time, than that film would be Kiss Me, Stupid. Upon its initial release this film was panned by critics and failed to capture an audience at the box office. With the majority of the blame for this film’s failure being pinned on its morally objectionable subject matter. Fortunately time can be kind and things that were once condemned can be reevaluated and given their just due.
Ironically the main thing that caused Kiss Me, Stupid so much trouble was essentially the same thing that made The Apartment a huge success just four years before for Wilder. Both film’s deal with characters who use other characters to further advance their agendas. With that being said, there is one way in which these two films present said subject matter. Most notably there is a cynical undertone that runs throughout Kiss Me, Stupid that is in direct contrast to the vibe going on in The Apartment.
From a production stand point there are not many areas where this film does not excel. At a time when the majority of films where shot in color Wilder insisted on shooting this film in Black and White, which puts the spotlight on characters and the story at hand. The film’s narrative is well constructed and all of the characters are well defined. And most importantly when it comes to humor this film does not miss a beat. Content wise it is a very satisfying blend of self-deprecating and morality based humor, that is often laced with Double Entendres.
From a performance stand point there are no weeks links as everyone is very good in their respective roles. With this film’s standout performance coming from Dean Martin (Ocean’s 11) in the role of pop crooner named Dino. His performance is essentially a caricature of his own persona. Another performance of note is Kim Novak (VertigoBell, Book and Candle) in the role of Polly the Pistol, a waitress that was hired by the two songwriters to pretend that she is one of their wives. Needless to say the moments that Novak and Martin share onscreen are this film’s strongest asset. Ultimately Kiss Me, Stupid is vastly underrated film that deserves a place next to Billy Wilder’s more highly regarded films.
The BluRay:
Kiss Me, Stupid comes on a 25 GB single layer BluRay. The film is presented in a 1080 progressive widescreen. The source used is in great shape. Contrast and black levels look consistently strong throughout. Details look sharp, grain looks natural and there no issues with DNR or compression.
This release comes with one audio option, a DTS-HD mono English. The audio is also in great shape as dialog comes through with crystal clarity and everything sounds balanced throughout. And though this is a dialog heavy film, when it comes to ambient noises they are well represented in this audio mix. Also music plays a large role in the plot and whenever music occurs it sounds appropriately robust.
Extras for this release are limited to a trailer for the film (2 minutes 35 seconds – 1080 Progressive Widescreen). Overall Kiss Me, Stupid gets a solid audio / video presentation from Olive Films.
Note: Olive Films are also releasing this film on DVD.

Music. Soothing the savage beast and all that.

Music.

It’s always amazing to me how our brains link things together. Since I have only the one brain, I can’t say whether my experiences are unique or universal. Things like tasting a particular food and immediately conjuring a memory.

Things like – hearing crooner Dean Martin’s voice soaring from the shop’s speakers and immediately thinking of my Dad, the biggest Dean Martin fan I have ever known. I’m guessing that – because he had it on the television and I was intrigued enough to watch with him, I remember segments like Crazy Gugenheim and Foster Brooks, the (now politically-and-socially-incorrect) lovable drunk who could not get out a complete sentence without a hiccup.

Now, I just have to hear Dean Martin singing and I can remember my Dad in his big green easy chair, watching the TV program.

Foster Brooks, the lovable drunk, lived to the age of 89. Singer and actor Dean Martin was 78 when the curtain dropped down. My father had just pushed 50.

So, I hear his music and think of him. Because we never had that time together as adults. Never spoke together as men. Always – dad and kid son.

I grew up, but he never grew old.

VINTAGE MARTIN & LEWIS

Here’s some vintage footage of a complete Martin & Lewis Dinner Show from the Copacabana, New York’s famed nightclub, supposedly from 1954. The boys broke up in July of 1956 and “That’s Amore” was written in 1953 and featured in their film “The Caddy,” so 1954 seems a reasonable date as to when this show was filmed.

When I was a kid, and when I say “kid” I mean 5-10 years of age, I absolutely loved Jerry Lewis. As I grew older, his “talent” grew thin to me. After awhile, a man in his 50s acting like a six-year-old just didn’t seem funny to me. However, I never tired of Dean. In fact, the older I grew, the more I appreciated Dean’s talent. I think Dean Martin was far more complex than history gives him credit for being.

One of the things that always frustrated me about Dino was that during and after his Rat Pack days, it was almost impossible to get him to finish a song when he was working live in a nightclub. I could never figure out whether it was a manifestation of low self-esteem or if he just loved making people laugh more than he loved singing. I think, like so many difficult questions in life, that the answer lies somewhere in between the two possible explanations.

I mean when he was singing and swinging with the Rat Pack, he was working with Sammy Davis Jr., generally considered to be THE most dynamic performer of his time and Frank Sinatra, “The Chairman of the Board.” I don’t know if it was merely a question for Dean of how to compete with those two as much as it may have been, why bother? No one was going to come close to Sammy in terms of energy and eclecticism and Frank looked upon balladeering as an art form whereas Dean looked upon it as a living. I always got the feeling that Dean felt inferior to Frank when he was singing with him but that deep down, he knew that he, too, was a good singer. Of course, Dean was also a prisoner of his own creation. He took on the persona of the lazy, good-natured drunk who eased his way through a show, and a career, while paying as little attention to the details as possible. Forget about the fact that it would have been quite impossible to have been as successful in as many different areas of show business for as long as he was if Dean had actually been the intemperate stooge he pretended to be. I don’t think there’s any doubt that Dean Martin did not have the same level of ambition as Frank Sinatra or Jerry Lewis when it came to his career but he was no bum just stumbling through his success either.

And then there’s the whole idea of the comedian in Dean that eventually won out over the singer. As the Martin & Lewis partnership progressed and then deteriorated, Jerry’s ambition was to do everything and be seen as a genius at everything. At some point, Jerry even began insisting on having his own songs in their films. The original winning formula for their movies was that Dino was the singing straight man and Jerry was the comedic, childlike stooge. Somewhere along the way I think Jerry grew jealous of Dean’s singing talent and felt he needed to show everyone that he, too, could sing. He couldn’t, of course, but that didn’t stop him from trying. On the other hand, Dean WAS, by his very nature, funny. In fact, many of the people who knew and worked with both men through the years noted that Dean was naturally the funnier of the two men. This is particularly interesting when we move ahead a few years to Dean’s relationship with Sinatra too. Frank was painfully unfunny. If you listen to some of Sinatra’s live performances, his monologue is almost always cringe-worthy. He was not funny. I think he wanted to be funny and maybe he thought he was funny but he was not. Dino on the other hand was very funny. In the early years he contributed to some of his early material not by sitting down and actually working with his writers but by ad-libbing off their original ideas and material when on stage. As years went by, a lot of Dean’s material became somewhat cringe-worthy as well, particularly in the latter years of his variety show but if nothing else, Dean could always deliver a line better than most.

Anyway, here’s some real fun for a “Throwback Thursday.” It’s Martin & Lewis at The Copacabana circa 1954. By the way, please note the crowd noise. The Copa was known to be one of the toughest rooms to play on the club circuit but this is amazing to me. I mean this is Dean & Jerry at the pinnacle of their popularity and yet these people are still talking and going about their business as if these were two schmucks from Des Moines! Absolutely incredible!!!
